šŸŽ® 2024's Most Enjoyable Games & The War of the Rohirrim Review

We're choosing our favorite video games of the year and talking about what worked and what didn't for The Lord of the Rings anime.

Tuesday Edition December 10, 2024

As another year comes to a close, weā€™ll be looking back at some of our favorite entertainment of 2024, starting with the sixteen standout video games we enjoyed. Go through the list and see if you agree with our rankings!

Our other feature story is our review of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated offering that, while gorgeously rendered with plenty of praiseworthy moments, fails to stand on its own two hairy Hobbit feet.

And donā€™t forget about our super-special charity auction live from East Continental Gems, tonight at 8pm on eBay Live!

The video game industry is knee-deep in hard times, but sometimes belt-tightening reminds us whatā€™s important. That perspective informs our list of the best games of the year, and youā€™ll notice that our sixteen ranked picks have a common thread: they all feel like misfit masterpieces.

Our top pick in particular might be unexpected for some gamers. But what criteria are really the most important for judging the merits of a game? Among the remakes, sequels, or variations on a genre or theme are some familiar gems and perhaps some new discoveries awaiting our more adventurous newsletter readers!

But as spectacular as the visual nuance of this anime interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkeinā€™s Middle-earth is, the film has a problem developing emotional resonance behind all those pretty images.

Perhaps itā€™s not that surprising considering this film takes the sketch of a story, a few pages Tolkien jotted down in the Lord of the Ringsā€™ labyrinthine appendices, and expands it to feature length. But what really worked and what didnā€™t about The War of Rohirrim? Read on!
