Marvel is certainly known for its Easter eggs, but usually these take the form of references to the comics inside their on-screen properties. Our featured story in today’s newsletter, however, takes the term much more literally. But even with the Easter basket imagery shared on social media promoting Avengers: Doomsday, it would be naive to think that Marvel — or Robert Downey, Jr. himself — didn’t know exactly what they were doing. It’s hard to picture the artist behind the uncredited image saying, “Oops, I didn’t realize I put that in there!”

It’s not unlike the speculation surrounding the asterisk in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*. During marketing, studio head Kevin Feige famously said, “We won’t talk about the asterisk until after release,” but that didn’t stop people from making their guesses ahead of time. What better publicity could you ask for than people discussing the minutiae of your promo material for months before the movie comes out? After all, fan theorizing lasts much longer than a fleeting official confirmation!
