Animated Bloodborne Adaptation Sets Up a FromSoftware Movie Showdown

While fans may have to wait longer for a Bloodborne remaster, remake, or sequel, an upcoming movie adaptation signals that Sony hasn’t forgotten about its celebrated 2015 soulslike game. At CinemaCon 2026, Sony Pictures announced it is developing an animated feature film based on the FromSoftware title, which is sure to revel in all the horrific fire and fury that the game is known for.

The Bloodborne announcement comes after recent reports that a Bloodborne remake was pitched by the now-defunct studio Bluepoint, only for the proposal to be rejected by FromSoftware, despite Sony’s interest. This planned animated movie could serve as a way to keep interest in the property alive without necessarily needing the same level of FromSoftware buy-in that a remake would. But the other elephant in the room is that FromSoftware has another property deep in development with a rival movie studio with Elden Ring.

Acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker Alex Garland is set to write and direct a live-action movie adaptation of FromSoftware’s modern classic RPG, with the announced cast including Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, and Ben Whishaw. Sony Pictures isn’t involved directly with the project, with A24 and Bandai Namco Filmworks, a sister division of Bandai Namco Entertainment, which published the Elden Ring game and holds the IP rights, producing the project instead. Scheduled for a March 2028 release, the movie is poised to become one of the most ambitious dark fantasy films in recent memory.

Between movies based on Bloodborne and Elden Ring, soulslike fans are going to be eating well at cinemas in the coming years. But one can’t help but feel like development on Elden Ring from an outside studio at least informed Sony’s decision to move forward with its own feature film project adapting a FromSoftware property, made all the more intriguing by the dropped plans for a remake. Sony holds an IP stake in Bloodborne whereas it doesn’t with Elden Ring, a distinction that likely fuels these competing movies. A project of this magnitude is the most attention the 2015 game has seen in roughly a decade and it comes at least partially fueled by competition.

In all fairness, Sony has been steadily producing film and television titles based off of its blockbuster gaming properties for the past several years. This includes movies based on Uncharted and Until Dawn, a hit adaptation of The Last of Us on HBO, and a God of War Prime Video series deep in development. Bloodborne serves as a continuation of this trend, as one of a handful of FromSoftware projects Sony retains the IP for, but also one that happens to come under the shadow of a competing project.

Bloodborne has been a game begging for more official attention for years and it’s clear that Sony still has a vested interest in it. But few could’ve anticipated an animated movie based on the horror hack-and-slash, let alone one produced by prolific streamer Jacksepticeye. This fan involvement also brings an interesting angle to the project, and one that comes in the wake of Markiplier’s successful video game adaptation of Iron Lung at the beginning of 2026. With these developments, along with the cross-brand ubiquity of Mr. Beast, it’s clear Hollywood is paying more and more serious attention to streamers and their influence on the wider entertainment industry.

And maybe, just maybe, we may finally get that Bloodborne remake for modern consoles after all.
