The Running Man: Edgar Wright and Glen Powell Talk Stephen King Dystopia in 2025

Stephen King is right in Edgar Wright’s wheelhouse, and The Running Man feels very ready for a fresh adaptation from the director of Shaun of the Dead. He first read the darkly prophetic 1982 novel as a teenager, long before Arnold Schwarzenegger turned it into a cult ’80s action flick. In our exclusive interview for Den of Geek magazine, Wright makes it clear his version isn’t a remake but a return to King’s brutal vision: a near-future America where desperate citizens compete on a deadly reality show for survival and cash. Starring Glen Powell as everyman-turned-fugitive Ben Richards, the film trades in musclebound heroics for something more grounded.

For Powell, teaming up with Wright was a dream destined to come true. After years of mutual admiration (and a lucky run-in with Paramount execs), the Hit Man and Twisters star landed his chance to play King’s angry, working-class underdog. Both Wright and Powell note how eerily relevant The Running Man feels today, with its bleak view of media manipulation and widening social divides. Wright calls it “a chilling prediction of where we’re at,” and Powell adds that King’s story still hits home for anyone feeling powerless against a system stacked against them.
