šŸ’€ Exclusive: Fear Street Director Has Big Ideas for the Franchise

We spoke with Fear Street: Prom Queen director Matt Palmer about his classic horror influences and how Halloween inspired his ideas about the franchise's future.

Friday Edition May 23, 2025

ā€œA spring night...soft moonlight...five beautiful Prom Queen candidates...dancing couples at the Shadyside High prom -- these should be the ingredients for romance,ā€ reads the description of R. L. Stine’s The Prom Queen, the basis for the latest chapter of the Fear Street movie franchise. ā€œBut stir in one brutal murder -- then another, and another -- and the recipe quickly turns to horror.ā€œ

The protagonist of Fear Street: Prom Queen has a different name, of course, and the aesthetic of the movie is much more visual, taking inspiration from the Italian giallo tradition that many American slashers pay tribute to. But this franchise has learned to modernize the ā€˜90s teen horror books quite skillfully, and the films somehow manage to pay homage while being their own thing.

In addition to our director interview below, be sure to read how this fourth installment of the franchise actually improves upon the 2021 film trilogy.
