When reinventing a beloved movie from 40 years ago, it’s important to remember that there was a certain amount of cheesiness associated with films of a certain type from that era. So how do you pay homage to a schlock-fest like Deathstalker or a a satirical sci-fi movie like The Running Man without inadvertently making fun of them?

It’s a delicate balance that both Edgar Wright, director of The Running Man reboot, and Steven Kostanski, director of Deathstalker (2025), were willing to navigate. It didn’t hurt that Wright’s star Glen Powell knew the Schwarzenegger family and could solicit the original star’s opinion. And Kostanski grew up with a sense of awe for Roger Corman’s Deathstalker franchise.

It comes down to intent. Approach the quirky ‘80s film with respect, and the rest will follow!
