Friday Edition December 20, 2024
Not everyone has seen the late ‘70s animated interpretations of J.R.R. Tolkein’s Middle-earth saga, but there are some surprising commonalities between The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and earlier adaptations. The roads go ever on and on…
Plus, we sat down with multi-award winning Lin-Manuel Miranda at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park where the vibes were as sunny as the locale for this theater geek. The setting was appropriate for the ensuing chat about Mufasa: The Lion King, but we also gleaned a bit of insight about a possible stage adaptation of a classic 1979 action movie turned musical!

Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim Connects to More Than Just Books and Peter Jackson
Believe it or not, the flashy new anime film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, has more in common with the late ‘70s, early ‘80s animated Tolkien efforts than picky Tolkein fans might realize.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Considers If He’d Make Warriors into a Movie
Lin-Manuel Miranda grew up loving the 1979 action thriller, Warriors, and in particular, its iconic line of dialogue, “Warriors, come out and play-yay!” He even went so far as to release as a concept album along with musician Eisa Davis, filled with starry friends and vocalists like Ghostface Killah, RZA, Nas, Colman Domingo, and Phillipa Soo. So is he developing a musical for the stage or the big screen?
The answer to that question has a lot to do with development rights, but for now, the released tracks are Miranda’s “love letter to a movie,” although he’s open to “exploring what it looks like on the stage.”
“Lin-Manuel considers Mads Mikkelsen one of the all-time great James Bond villains and thought that never writing for his voice amounted to a dereliction of duty.”
