Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega SLAY (Unicorns) on the Den of Geek x SXSW Magazine Cover 🦄

Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, and writer-director Alex Scharfman break down their new A24 comedy Death of a Unicorn in our exclusive cover story.

SXSW MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE

March 6, 2025 - Austin, Texas - Den of Geek, the leading destination for genre entertainment fans, is thrilled to announce its return to the iconic SXSW Film and TV Festival in 2025, complete with the latest SPECIAL EDITION issue of Den of Geek Magazine!

In our exclusive cover story, we poke around DEATH OF A UNICORN with JENNA ORTEGA, PAUL RUDD, and director ALEX SCHARFMAN. Discover the reasons Ortega finds unicorn blood “harder getting off,” how these creatures are Old Testament terrifying, why a “pure-hearted maiden in 2025… [would be] an idealist empath who’s on a college campus somewhere protesting,” and much more!

In addition to unicorn magic, Den of Geek also gets an exclusive first-look at HAPPY FACE, Paramount+’s unnerving new twist on the serial killer and true crime genre from the point-of-view of a killer’s daughter. We speak with ANNALEIGH ASHFORD, who plays MELISSA G. MOORE, the daughter of real-life serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, aka the “Happy Face Killer,” as well as the REAL MOORE about the TV series and a lifetime cast in a monster’s shadow.

“[Happy Face] shows what it’s like to have these letters still coming into my mailbox, him watching my Instagram, strangers reaching out to me, just the emotions of what that’s like, and the emotions of what my children go through, having a grandfather who’s a serial killer,” Moore tells us.

The issue also features our exclusive catch-up with director GAVIN O’CONNOR ahead of the SXSW premiere of his long-awaited THE ACCOUNTANT 2. It’s a film O’Connor and star BEN AFFLECK have been planning for nearly nine years, and one which the helmer says “was a rollercoaster trying to get it made.” Still, here is with part-two in a planned trilogy and the realization that “we were hammers on a nail, refusing to give up.”

All of that, plus previews for the SXSW narrative film, documentary, television, and music line-ups can be found in the new issue of DEN OF GEEK MAGAZINE, which will be distributed on the ground and for free in Austin, and which is available to view online here!
