šŸ’« Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Introduces an Unconventional Klingon

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy actor Karim Diané and showrunner Noga Landau dig into Jay-Den's journey in "Vox in Excelso".

Friday Edition January 30, 2026

Conventional is boring! Just ask the subject of our headliner interview, Karim DianƩ, who plays Klingon cadet Jay-Den in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Far from the stereotypical member of the warrior race typically portrayed in the franchise, Jay-Den is more contemplative and deferential than his compatriots, creating a much more complex version of the typically tough-as-nails Klingons.

Our other feature stories buck convention as well. We have commentary from Seth Rogen and the writers of The Invite, a small film generating buzz at the Sundance Film Festival that runs contrary to what Rogen’s The Studio character would seek out as a producer. And we have our review of the atypical sci-fi film Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die with its dark humor and satire. If the bleak midwinter has you craving anything different to break the cold monotony of the season, this is the newsletter for you!
