One of the best ways to find a fresh take on familiar creative ground is to blend in unexpected cross-genre content. Our newsletter is headlined by a South by Southwest round-up which has a hodge-podge of genre topics in both television and movies, but this year’s festival was also transformed by all of its many tracks happening simultaneously — a first for SXSW that saw one of our busiest interview rooms ever.
But even in the individual reports coming out of Austin, such as our exclusive interviews for the films Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice and Seekers of Infinite Love, we saw some unique storytelling mixtures. The cast and crew of the first film do a deep dive with us about a seemingly unrelated television debate that ends up being very important to the movie, and the creatives behind the latter share how a movie about cults can be a sneaky way to frame a story about sibling drama.
Comedies get serious, and dramas are funny! Gotta keep the audience on their toes.
