Friday Edition May 16, 2025
Our featured stories today are all about how beloved franchises evolve and build upon their inspiration, and it’s more than just nostalgia. There was a recent exhibition called Future Pastime, featuring the art of Syd Mead, and many in attendance were struck by how hopeful Mead’s futurist vision was considering he inspired the looks of movies like Blade Runner and Aliens. It’s nice to know that the giants of sci-fi cinema owe so much to an optimistic artist!
Meanwhile, we’re taking a closer look at a franchise nearing its supposed end, Mission: Impossible, and another experiencing a new beginning, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In the former, we’re wondering if there might be more beyond Tom Cruise’s supposed finale, and in the latter, we’re trying to extrapolate what might be in store for the Buffy reboot now that a mysterious new lead actor has been cast.
Hopeful futures, false finales, and speculative reboots! It’s enough to make your head spin!
