Tuesday Edition December 17, 2024
Everyone loves a good end-of-year best-of list! Sometimes itâs all about making sure your favorite TV show or movie made the cut and feeling validated when you see its high rank. Other times, thereâs a certain enjoyment in disagreeing with the shows that perhaps are too low on the list or unfairly ranked above those some may deem to be of better quality.
But whether you agree or disagree with our choices, you will undoubtedly be entertained by what we feel is the most comprehensive list of the best movies of the past year, as well as two separate lists for US and UK offerings on television. All in all, 2024 was a truly magnificent year in on-screen entertainment, and there was plenty to praise in every category.

The Best Movies of 2024
Why is everyone always convinced the sky is falling and cinemaâs days are numbered? This year brought plenty of artistic and compelling films that are sure to burrow their way into the collective subconscious for years to come. The movie theater is alive and well!
Whether itâs the sight of MuadâDib standing before a nation of radicalized disciples as if he were a space-aged T.E. Lawrence, or just the cozy sight of Mike Faist, Josh OâConnor, and Zendaya sharing a ratty motel bedframe, the year has gifted us with indelible movie moments. Sometimes theyâre startling visions, too, as searing as director RaMell Ross innovating what it means to place viewers inside the perspective of a protagonist in Nickel Boys; the box office enjoyed another double-header event with its own social media nickname (Glicked); and Mikey Madison showed the world how we handle things down in South Brooklyn.
It was a good year for movies! Here are our staffâs collective picks for the best of âem.

The Best TV Shows of 2024
TV was fit-to-bursting with geek-friendly storytelling in 2024. From quality superhero spinoffs (The Penguin, Agatha All Along) to ambitious genre animations (Arcane, Invincible) to heady sci-fi book adaptations (Silo, 3 Body Problem), it didnât take much effort to find nerdy bliss in the TV world this year. Combine that with the more âtraditionalâ cable efforts like ShĹgun, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Interview with the Vampire, and we had ourselves a recipe for another calendar turn of televisual excellence.
If our list of the best TV shows of 2024 is any indication, the geeks have well and truly inherited the episodic earth once again.

Weâve had shows so good they explain why clever, creative people choose unstable careers and crazy hours to make them. Join us in celebrating the most entertaining UK TV series of the year!
"Apple TV+ must love dystopian drama Silo - which won a place on our Best US TV Shows of 2024 list - as much as we do, because they just ordered two more seasons."
