Volume I, Issue 3 November 20, 2024

What if you took a simulated flight through the Grand Canyon and then followed it up with the real thing? That’s what POWER-UP host Sam Stone did in a segment we’re calling “Adventure Mode”! Den of Geek’s new gaming podcast (available both in video and audio form), is always worth checking out, but this one’s a doozy!

Along with our editor’s picks and trivia of the day, we’ve also got our review of Prime Video’s Dune: Prophecy, which attempts to expand on the Frank Herbert story made popular in the Villeneuve films. But does it succeed in doing so? Read on!

Dune: Prophecy Episode 1 Review: An Ineffective Sisterhood

Photo: Attila Szvacsek | HBO

We’re sad to report that Dune: Prophecy, the new television adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal work, is… well… not good. Even worse than the 1984 David Lynch movie.

For example, Dune: Prophecy addresses the problem of catching audience members up with the prequel story by reducing almost all dialogue to exposition, complete with voiceover narration for the first ten minutes or so of the episode, referencing a war against “thinking machines” and elements that viewers might know from the movies.

Yet, for all its attempts to explain the timeline and characters and basic motivations, Dune: Prophecy never creates a legible story, let alone an engaging one.
