š The Bride! Review Highlights Strong Performances and Chaotic Story
Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale let their monster flags fly in The Bride!, a Frankenstein movie that amounts to pure madness.
Friday Edition March 6, 2026
Lately it seems that writers and directors are less concerned with canonical accuracy when adapting or reinterpreting a familiar story. One such creative interpretation, Wuthering Heights, is barely in the rear view mirror, and in todayās newsletter youāll find a review for the equally off-kilter, neo-classical The Bride! which praises its lead performances while admitting to some confusing storytelling.
Television showrunners are in on the game as well, as youāll see in our review of Guy Ritchieās Young Sherlock, a Prime Video series which invents a whole new backstory for the famous detective and his archenemy Moriarty. Weāll even hear from Star Trek legend Jonathan Frakes about the brave interpretation of the franchiseās long-established optimism in the latest spinoff, Starfleet Academy, particularly in the penultimate episode of the first season, which Frakes directed.
This trend is not without its critics, but overall, audiences seem receptive. Where do you fall on the canon faithfulness spectrum?
