šŸ›ļø The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is an Ode to Journalism and the Creative Spirit

The Devil Wears Prada 2 sympathizes not only with a dying breed of print journalism, but an entire media ecosystem where filmmakers and movie stars are also being squeezed by capitalists’ race to the bottom.

ā€œMay the 4th be with you!ā€

Would it surprise you to learn that this phrase and its subsequent fan holiday originated outside the home country of George Lucas? The above pun was first used only two years after the premiere of Star Wars as a supportive message to Margaret Thatcher during the counting of the 1979 general election votes, in hopes that she would carry the day. The Brits even cited May the 4th during a 1994 session of the UK Parliament as ā€œan appropriate date for a defence debateā€ due to its Star Wars associations.

But the first Star Wars Day celebration was actually at the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2011, and it featured, as you might expect, plenty of Star Wars trivia, tribute films, and a costume contest. Canada kept the fun going the following year, and the city of Ottawa even played ā€œThe Imperial Marchā€ on its Peace Tower carillon bells on May 4, 2015. The observance has since spread far and wide, and although it’s more of a merchandising gimmick these days, Star Wars Day will likely persist not just in the United States, but as a global fan phenomenon for many years to come.
